Q1. Where is the nearest pub?

The nearest pub is the King George IV down the hill towards Eskdale approximately 3.5 miles away. However, within another two miles from there are three more good quality hostelries.

Q2. Do you allow dogs?

We allow a maximum of two dogs but after a series of disastrous dog experiences, please bear in mind the following:

  • Dogs are not allowed upstairs in the house or cottage or downstairs in the bothy.
  • Dogs are not allowed on any items of furniture.
  • Dogs must never be left in a cottage when you go out unless a prior arrangement has been made with us.
  • You as the owner take responsibility for the additional cleaning and hoovering of the living areas that may result at the end of your stay. ie. fouling, chewing and especially moulting!
  • We reserve the right to make a charge for any damage done by your pet!

Q3. Can we come for a short breaks or weekend?

We do allow people to stay for periods of less than a week in the "off peak" seasons. The minimum period of stay is two nights. If you want to stay for a weekend or mid week, the best thing to do is fill in an enquiry form or ring us on 01946 723277

Q4. Do we need to bring bedding?

All bedding is provided in all of the cottages, as are towels.

Q5. Do we pay extra for fuel?

No. All heating is provided by a mixture of electric storage heaters, solid fuel fires and a rayburn in the cottage and the house. We always ensure that there is enough coal (and sometimes logs) and firelighters and you just help yourself from the outside fuel store.

Q6. Is there mobile phone reception at Woodend?

No. We are rather remote but there are patches of reception on the fell road and on the hill behind us.

Q7. Where are the nearest shops?

Both the villages of Ulpha and Eskdale have post offices with limited provisions. Gosforth, approximately 10 miles towards Whitehaven has a small supermarket with most things that you would need. Broughton-in-Furness, approximately 8 miles away has a very good quality shop, butchers, bakery and post office, although rather expensive for your general shopping. The larger stores are situated in Barrow-in-Furness and Whitehaven both about 25 miles away.

Q8. Do you take payment cards

I'm afraid we don't. The problem with online payment systems is that there is a charge made and a transaction charge of 3% on a peak period holiday can cost somewhere in the region of £25 to £30. We would need to charge for this so most people would rather write out a cheque and post it to save the money!
